The Johnsonburg Public Library was started in 1937 by The Crescent Study Club - a group of civic minded women with a belief in literacy for all. Our first home was on the second floor on the Johnsonburg Community Center. In 1983, Stackpole Corporation donated their factory building to the library so that it would always have a home and one without a lease. Our building is the largest one on Market Street. Currently we lease the downstairs to Accu-Grind, a local secondary shop.
We recently completed several renovations to our building. First - we upgraded our shelving in our children's section to reflect a more child friendly environment. This "new" area will be dedicated in memory of Mrs. Evelyn Graebner - a beloved English teacher at the JAHS who taught many of us. We also had our doorway painted to look more inviting as well as incorporate features of our across the street neighbor - "The Brick Block" - we also incorporated lions to guard our portal of knowledge - this doorway is in memory of Dick Glover - a beloved patron who loved reading.
We also renovated our upstairs into a meeting space- thanks to a generous donation from Domtar. In order to have loading access to this space, we finally got our elevator repaired - this was thanks to an incredible donation in memory of John and Dena Casciani - longtime Johnsonburg residents who touched many lives.
